Villabuena de Álava, also known as Eskuernaga, is a small municipality in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country. With a population of just 306 inhabitants, it is the municipality with the most wineries per inhabitant in the world, with a total of 43. The town is located in the region of Laguardia-Rioja Alavesa, one of the most important wine-growing areas in Spain. Vineyards surround the village, creating an idyllic landscape of rolling hills and green fields. The history of Villabuena de Álava is closely linked to viticulture. As early as the Middle Ages, the village was an important centre of wine production. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway in the area further boosted the development of the wine industry. Today, the wineries of Villabuena de Álava produce some of the best wines in Rioja.
