2Visiting Viña Ijalba means stepping into a story that began in 1975. Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba planted his first vineyard on the site of an old open-pit mine. To this previously exploited land, he added between 50 and 60 centimeters of poor soil taken from roadside clearings. In doing so, he faithfully recreated the traditional soils used in quality viticulture in Rioja shallow, infertile hillside terrains that yield low production while preserving the region’s unique character.
